ABOUT OUR ESCN DATABASE REPORTS

ESCN Database Reports (ISSN 1082-6637) is an ongoing series of reference books that provide Quick Reference Indexing of data found in the local news and advertisement sections of the early South Carolina newspapers. There is one book published for each calendar year of a particular early newspaper's publication life. Each book contains four (4) separate Database Reports that provide newspaper publication data on the following general subject classifications:

Individual Names
Organizational Names
Shipping & Maritime Articles
Slavery Related Articles

Additionally, beginning with newspaper publication year 1760, two (2) more Database Reports were added to our ESCN Database Reports books, to provide newspaper publication data on the general subject classifications of:

Name References
Blind Advertisements

Published newspaper data related to these various general subject classifications is researched from microfilm archives of the newspaper and is input into a fully relational database designed for the accumulation and management of newspaper publication data. At the end of our research into a given publication year, that data is then organized into the six (6) Database Reports noted above, which are then combined together to produce a single reference book for that given publication year of a particular early SC newspaper.

The records displayed within the various Database Reports are sorted and displayed alphabetically, except for records found in the Slavery Related and Blind Advertisement Database Reports, which are displayed chronologically. See the Explanation of Database Reports for more detailed information and example listings for each of the various Database Reports.

Each ESCN Database Reports book is also fully indexed by both Occupation and Article Subject, allowing readers to quickly locate page references within each book that contain data records that meet their particular search criteria on these subjects. A Glossary is provided in all of our books as well, to define Old English and/or Early American words that may be uncommon to modern day readers. Readers will additionally find an extensive listing of Early South Carolina Newspaper Microfilm Locations By State. This listing indicates Libraries and Research institutions located across the entire United States where the early South Carolina newspapers may be found and researched on microfilm. We should also note that all of our books are printed on acid-free paper to insure a high level of archival quality and are available in both hardcover and softcover versions.
